Talking With Children About Gun Safety

Guns are in more than one-third of all U.S. households, so they’re a very real danger to children, whether you own one or not. That’s why it’s important to talk to children about the potential dangers of guns— and what to do if they find one. If you do keep a gun in the house, it’s vital to keep it out of sight and out of the reach of children. This seminar is for parents and caregivers of children. Professionals are also welcome to attend.

Join Bon Secours Family Focus and Norfolk Police Department for an informative discussion on gun safety and children. We will discuss:

Your responsibilities if you have a gun in your home —ensuring that your weapon is secure with children around.

What to do if you see someone carrying a weapon.

How you should carry a weapon in a vehicle.

When your child goes to a friend’s or relative’s home for play dates or sleepovers, do you ask if there are guns in the

home and if they are stored safely?

Gun safety rules for children to follow if they encounter a gun.

         Real guns and pretend play.
