Dear Colleagues, Please share this information with your staff and community agencies. See attachments as well. Thank you for your support as we continue to strive to empower families and communities.

The Newport News Child Advocacy Team and Virginia's Office of the Attorney General has partnered to offer a FREE conference for professionals to address the issue of opioid abuse in the Hampton Roads region on March 15, 2017. We know that all of our localities in the region and across the country have seen an increase in opioid related cases, so this conference will be an opportunity for professionals from the region to learn more about the epidemic and hopefully leave with tools and resources to take back to their communities. In addition to the keynote address given by Attorney General Mark Herring, we will to host a full day conference geared towards professionals (law enforcement, human services, educators, religious/faith leaders, etc.) that will cover topics such as the crisis specific to Hampton Roads in comparison with the nation, understanding opiates and what to look for, how it affects children and families, and treatment and recovery. Additionally, we will have resources available for attendees to take with them to learn more about the issue and accessing services.

Additionally, on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, we will host a screening of “Heroin – The Hardest Hit” produced by the AG’s Office followed by a panel discussion with professionals. The screening will be held at the Peebles Theater on the campus of Christopher Newport University (1 Avenue of the Arts). Refreshments will be served beginning at 5:30 P.M. and the screening will begin at 6:30 P.M. The screening is free and open to the general public.
