Human Trafficking 101

What you need to know about trafficking in our area

The Newport News Department of Human Services and the Virginia Beach Justice Initiative are presenting Human Trafficking 101 on Wednesday, May 17. According to the National Human Hotline Resource Center, human trafficking is describedHuman Trafficking_SC as a form of modern slavery that occurs in every state, including Virginia. Learn more about the issue and how you can help by attending one of the two sessions of Human Trafficking 101. Guests can register for the morning session that runs from 10 a.m.to 12 p.m. or register for the evening session that runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Both sessions take place at South Morrison Family Education Center, 746 Adams Drive in Newport News.

Topics of the workshop include:
· the grooming process of traffickers;
· the signs of someone being victimized;
· the lingo surrounding trafficking;
· why Hampton Roads is “the perfect storm” for trafficking; and
· how you can respond to help trafficking victims in your area.

The Virginia Beach Justice Initiative reports an estimated 17,500 foreign nationals are trafficked annually in the United States alone. The number of US citizens trafficking within the country is even higher. An estimated 200,000 American children are at high risk for trafficking into the sex industry each year.

In January, Attorney General Mark R. Herring, was instrumental in creating a Human Trafficking Task Force in response to the challenge facing Hampton Roads. It is important as a community we address this issue and work together to help put an end to it.
